Project 5: develop your fashion eye

This project consists of taking photos of fashion I see that interests me. The ability to recognize new trends and trends in streetwear. Since I live in Hawaii, which is not a good place to find trend setters, and I particularly am interested in Japanese Fashion, I decided to use Photos from recent Japanese magazine of fashion I like. I’m able to pick up well on Japanese fashion and what is “In” in Japan. I’ll be posting images now and then of what I think is popular in Japanese fashion. I’m pulling from primary research of viewing fashion when I was last in Japan in Oct as well as viewing Japanese tourists in Hawaii. I’m also pulling from secondary research such as Japanese magazines.

  • Beret hats are very popular in Japan. Mostly felt in material. Popular colors include blacks, reds, white, creams, grays. Sometimes embellished with studs, pearls, flowers, or bows.
  • Stockings with designs are also popular. There are whole stores dedicated to leggings. Patterned, colored, and lace.
  • High wasted skits that are often patterned or have heavy detailing paired with a simple T-shirt or graphic T. Popular to have a wide belt or wide waist band.

Project 6: get out there

This project is about getting ideas from places such as history, architecture, nature, etc. I collect images that inspire me and that I want to translate into designs later. I find images in magazines advertisements, artwork, etc. Here are a few images that I’ve found online that inspire me (color, shape, texture, mood, etc.)

Project 7: begin secondary research

I do secondary research a lot with costume designing. I like to draw from modern fashion, songs, films, books, etc. Here is some secondary research I did not to long ago for a play I costume designed called Etta Jenks.

project 8: edit your research

This project is about making a mood board or theme board. I’ve done this in the past in costume design classes. I should incorporate it more into my work designing. Sometimes I find it helpful, and sometimes I don’t, but I can and have done it. So, here’s one I did for class (unfortunately it doesn’t represent color, i wasn’t worrying about color at that point.) 1930s & sci-fi

project 9: visualize

This project is taking the images I’ve collected and turning them into fashion ideas. I choose a house that I liked for it’s colorful scale shingles, and the triangles. Then I just doodled a bit what I liked and then did a quick sketch of how I could work it into a costume. Maybe not the most realistic :P, but it was just a quick doodle.
